Potassium Product Promises to Lower Blood Pressure
American's average potassium intake is shockingly low--barely one third of the recommended 4700mgs/day. Low potassium intake is a major factor in the development of high blood pressure. Since May is National High Blood Pressure Education Month, it is good to know what new products can help control this disease.
The company, Unilever, has introduced a new product called Promise activ Supershots with potassium for lowering blood pressure. (That same company also makes Supershots with phytosterols for lowering blood cholesterol.) The company states that the new fruit-based product provides a simple, on-the-go option to help consumers achieve a diet rich in potassium. Each 3.3 ounce shot of Promise activ Supershots provides 350mgs of potassium--the amount in a small banana. The price is higher than the cost of a banana, but for people that won't or don't eat much fruit, it is a good deal.
The benefits of potassium to help control blood pressure are backed by research. Diets rich in potassium have been linked to lower blood pressures, partly because they help offset the blood pressure-raising effects of sodium (salt). And lower blood pressure reduces cardiovascular risk.
Ounce-for-ounce, these shots are pricey, especially when compared to fruits and vegetables which are rich sources of potassium too. Why not just eat a banana, or apricots, or nectarine or drink 1/2 cup of orange juice for the same potassium as well as a good dose of fiber and other nutrients?
Bottom Line: When these healthy foods are not available, such as when traveling, or if you just need help getting one of the recommended 4-7 servings of fruits and veggies each day, Promise active Supershots with potassium is a good alternative.
